Bien que le son de l’American Trad Rock est assez différent de celui de son homologue britannique, il partage la même esthétique – à savoir, il est dédié à maintenir le son et l’esprit du rock classique des années 60 en vie. Lorsque le British Trad Rock s’appuie sur les Beatles et l’influence mod, l’American Trad Rock est influencé par le Southern Fried Boogie et une base d’improvistion blues.
The Grateful Dead et The Allman Brothers ont été les deux précurseurs de l’American Trad Rock, même s’il existe des influences des Stones et des Faces jeté dans le son de temps en temps également. Les tout premiers trad rockers américains sont les Georgia Satellites et les Black Crowes qui apparaissent dans le milieu et la fin des années 80, ils ont grandi dans le southern rock et le roots rock. Dès le début des années 90, l’American Trad Rock a commencé à prendre forme avec des groupes qui sonnaient comme les Allman Brothers, tel que Widespread Panic, et par le milieu de la décennie, il ya eu une vague dans l’esprit similaire au Grateful Dead (Blues Traveler, Phish), qui s’étaient construit un grand public en tournant constamment.
The Blues Traveler réunissaient ces groupes dans le cadre de la tournée H.O.R.D.E. Moniker, et en 1996, le festival itinérant rivalisait avec son homologue alternatif, Lollapalooza, en popularité.
